52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing - Week 27

Week 27 – Donate to Support Survivors and Families from Robertson, David A. 52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing

This week focuses on supporting Residential School Survivors and their families.

For many Survivors, sharing what happened at residential schools was never an option. Many carried deep feelings of shame, had little support, and did not feel safe speaking about their experiences. As a result, countless stories remained untold for generations.

Many families also continue to live with unanswered questions about loved ones who never returned home. They may never know how they died or where they were buried. While we can never undo the harm caused by Canada's residential school system, we are now learning more about the truth of what happened. Alongside that growing awareness, organizations across the country are working to support Survivors, families, and communities as they heal from the lasting impacts of this trauma.

Many of these organizations are non-profit charities that rely on grants, fundraising, and donations to continue providing vital programs and services. This is where each of us has an opportunity to help.

One of the simplest ways to show your support is by making a donation directly to an organization doing this important work. You can also organize a fundraiser in your community, or workplace.

Robertson shares the story of a young girl named Willa, who held an annual lemonade stand to support a different cause each year. One summer, she created a yellow sign decorated with Medicine Wheels that read, "Profits go to Residential School Survivors." She wore an orange shirt with the message "Every Child Matters" and invited people to "pay what you can" for a glass of lemonade. In just one day, Willa raised $1,000 to support Survivors.

Her story is a powerful reminder that meaningful change does not always require a grand gesture. Small acts of kindness, when done with purpose, can make a real difference.

You may be wondering, "Where should I donate?" That is an important question. Taking the time to research organizations helps ensure your contribution supports reputable groups doing meaningful work, rather than someone attempting to profit from an important cause.

Here are a few organizations to help you get started:

  • Indian Residential School Survivors Society

  • Legacy of Hope Foundation

  • True North Aid

  • First Nations Child and Family Caring Society

  • Reconciliation Canada

  • The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund

  • Mama Bear Clan

Whether you choose to make a donation, organize a fundraiser, or simply help raise awareness, every action matters. Supporting Survivors and their families is one meaningful way we can all contribute to reconciliation.
