Happy Pride Month
Happy Pride Month, folks!!
Yes, June has arrived, and with it comes a celebration that is joyful, colourful, hopeful, and so deeply meaningful to so many.
Pride began as a response to hate, exclusion, and discrimination. It grew through the courage of people who insisted that their lives, relationships, identities, and stories were worthy of dignity and respect. Today it remains both a celebration and a reminder that the work of building a more just and inclusive world is not yet finished.
As an Affirming congregation of the United Church of Canada, McDougall United Church celebrates Pride wholeheartedly and unapologetically.
We celebrate the gifts 2SLGBTQIA+ people bring to our families, our neighbourhoods, our workplaces, our communities, and our church.
We celebrate every young person discovering they are not alone, and every elder who spent decades helping create a safer world for future generations of queer and trans people.
We celebrate parents learning how to love their children more deeply, and all the friendships, relationships, and communities that have built themselves on authenticity rather than fear.
We celebrate the expansive love and joy of Pride: the freedom that comes from no longer hiding, the relief of being known and loved for who you are, the delight of finding your people, and the beauty of communities where diversity is not merely accepted but cherished.
At a time when many voices seem determined to traffic in fear, suspicion, division, and outrage, joy becomes its own kind of resistance. Every act of authenticity, every expression of love, every rainbow flag raised, every laugh shared among friends, every person who discovers they are wonderfully and beautifully made pushes back against a world that too often tells people they should be smaller, quieter, or less fully themselves.
Most of all, we celebrate the simple truth that every person bears the image of God. That image is reflected in remarkable diversity. Human beings do not come in a single story, experience, identity, or way of being in the world. The richness of creation is found in the richness of that diversity.
For McDougall United Church, being Affirming is about recognizing that 2SLGBTQIA+ people are already part of the Body of Christ, already part of our communities, already beloved by God, and already essential to the life we share together.
So this month we give thanks for the courage, wisdom, leadership, creativity, compassion, and resilience that queer and trans people bring to the world every day. We give thanks for the artists, advocates, teachers, parents, elders, youth, friends, allies, and neighbours whose lives enrich our communities. We give thanks for laughter, celebration, chosen family, and all the ways love continues to flourish despite every attempt to diminish it.
We pray for a future where every person can live openly, safely, and authentically. Until that day comes, we will keep celebrating, keep learning, keep advocating, and keep making room for joy.
Because this world could use a whole lot more queer joy!
Happy Pride Month from all of us at McDougall United Church.
