Morleyville Interpretive Signs

In 1873 George and John McDougall established a mission to the Stoney/Nakoda (Iyarhe) people at Morleyville. The site west of Cochrane on the Stoney/Nakoda reserve is now under the care of McDougall Stoney Mission Society. The Society has in recent years been deliberately and diligently engaging with many Stoney/Nakoda First Nations people to bring better understandings and reconciliation, and for care of the site. A major project for the past 3 years has been researching the history of the site from Indigenous and settler perspectives. Interpretive signs were prepared which were installed in June 2026 at the gate and along the trail. These describe the history, present use, and future hopes for the site. Text is in English and Stoney/Nakoda languages. The site buildings and recently restored memorial church are only open for special events, however the interpretive signs on site can be viewed at any time and are well worth a visit.
