Podcast Episode: “Flooding the Rink”

Heated Rivalry, a queer hockey story, is breaking through as a cultural phenomenon far beyond simple popularity metrics. Why here? Why now? And what does it reveal about inclusion and diversity in sport culture? For Pride month, we head into the (metaphorical) locker room to explore what this moment says about belonging, visibility, and what still needs to change on the ice and beyond. Is sport culture starting to shift? Is legislation keeping us stuck in the minor leagues? And what might that mean for other institutions still struggling to lace up their skates?

Podcast features: Rev. Bill Weaver, Ricardo De Menezes with special guests Linda Hunter, Laura Leyshon and Justin Connelly

Linda Hunter, Wild Rose United Church

Rev. Linda Hunter is the minister of Wild Rose United Church. She leads the congregation with compassion, wisdom, and a deep commitment to spiritual growth. As a dedicated spiritual leader, Rev. Hunter is known for her engaging sermons, community outreach, and efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming environment at the church. Her role includes guiding the church's mission, supporting members in their faith journey, and fostering a strong sense of community among the congregation.

Laura Leyshon, Stay in the Game Youth Sports

I am the Founder of Stay in the Game Youth Sports, a Calgary-based nonprofit dedicated to breaking down barriers and creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for youth to play, connect, and thrive. I worked  over 20 years as a photojournalist in Sweden and Canada—including many years spent on the sidelines as a sports photographer. I quickly learned how both both photography and sports culture has traditionally been very male-dominated while female sports were so very under-represented. It’s unfortunate that many sports environments still carry a strong masculine culture that can unintentionally exclude others.

Stay in the Game Youth Sports was born out of two moms recognizing a gap—seeing firsthand how youth sports can be segregated by gender, and how that often limits participation and belonging. They believed something better was possible: a space where passion, effort, and love of the game matter more than biological sex. Today, SITG is built on that vision—ensuring every young person has the opportunity to stay in the game, exactly as they are.
