Obituary

Lloyd Rotz of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the age of 91 years.

Lloyd was born in Smeaton, SK, on August 24, 1934. He was raised in Choiceland, SK, and had fond memories growing up on the family farm. He met his wife, JoAnne Sylvia Dyck from Rosthern, SK, in high school, and they married in 1956. He moved to Calgary in 1977 from Yorkton, SK, to take up a new teaching position, and his family followed in 1978.

One of Lloyd’s great loves was cars, and he taught automotive mechanics at Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary for many years. He was popular with his students and enjoyed helping them learn and practise in his shop. He claimed he retired because cars became too computerized for an old-school mechanic. During retirement, he enjoyed restoring old cars and could often be found in his garage tinkering with a classic car or searching through his extensive assortment of old parts for the perfect fit or a tweakable one.

Once called “the man with the cars and guitars,” Lloyd’s other great love was music. He played rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and steel guitar and enjoyed playing and singing in many bands over the years. He was proud of his collection of classic guitars and amplifiers, and the family home was often filled with music.

Lloyd enjoyed a full and rewarding life and was particularly proud of his children. He enjoyed nature and took pleasure in watching the birds and animals outside. He adored the multiple pets that came into his life. His most memorable vacations were spent camping, driving across Canada, visiting friends and family, and touring Europe.

He will be most remembered for his kindness, his love and care for his family and friends, his fairness and support for the underdog, his witty turn of phrase, and his ready sense of humour.

Lloyd is survived by his son, Douglas Peter Rotz of Calgary, AB; daughters, Shannon Kelly Rotz (James Edwin Charles Skene) of Vancouver, BC; Lorie Anne Hartman (Thomas Carl Hartman) of Cochrane, AB; and Ardith Dorene Rotz (Daniel Robert Budgen) of Barcelona, Spain, and Mouhous, France, respectively. Lloyd is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Fay and Frank Lamberty, of Penticton, BC; his sister-in-law, Karen Dyck, of Saskatoon, SK; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lloyd was predeceased by his wife, JoAnne Sylvia Rotz (née Dyck); and his parents, Elsie (née Phipps) and Peter Rotz.
