52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing - Week 32

Week 32 – Visit a Cultural Centre from Robertson, David A. 52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing

This week, we're encouraged to visit an Indigenous cultural centre or museum. It's an opportunity to learn through experience—by showing up, being present, listening, and engaging with the stories, history, and culture around us.

In this chapter, Robertson shares his family's trip to Haida Gwaii, just off the coast of British Columbia. Before the visit, he admits he didn't know much about the Haida Nation. During their week there, his family chose to unplug. They put away their phones, skipped the TV, and instead spent their time reading, exploring, talking with local people, and simply watching the ocean. Those conversations and experiences gave him a much deeper understanding of the Haida people's history, culture, and connection to the land.

It's a great reminder that some of the best learning happens when we slow down and take the time to listen. People have incredible stories to share if we're willing to ask questions and be present.

There are many Indigenous cultural centres and museums that offer meaningful opportunities to learn. Whether they focus on one Nation or several, these spaces invite us to experience Indigenous cultures with purpose and respect. You'll find exhibits, artwork, traditional practices that continue today, and opportunities to hear stories, ask questions, and deepen your understanding.

Not sure where to start? Here are a few places to explore in and around Calgary:

  • Tsuu T'ina Cultural Museum (Tsuut'ina Nation, southwest of Calgary)

  • Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park (Siksika Nation, about one hour east of Calgary)

  • The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (formerly Fort Calgary)

While you're there, consider supporting the cultural centre by purchasing something from the gift shop. It could be a book, a piece of artwork, or even a sticker for your laptop or water bottle. Small purchases help support these important spaces and can also become great conversation starters, giving you the chance to share what you've learned with others.

So, where will you explore this week? I'd love to hear where you go and what you discover!

Ishneyes,
Jennifer
