52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing - Week 37
Week 37 – Watch Survivor Video Testimony from Robertson, David A. 52 Ways to Reconcile: How to Walk with Indigenous Peoples on the Path to Healing
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada created an important space for Survivors to share their stories and experiences. By listening to their testimonies, we can learn about the history of residential schools in a deeply personal way. We can hear their voices, feel the emotion behind their words, and begin to understand the experiences that shaped their lives.
Reading the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report and its Calls to Action is an important part of learning, however when we only read the reports, we can miss the personal connection that comes from hearing directly from Survivors.
We cannot change the past, and sadly, we may never have the opportunity to hear the stories of everyone who experienced residential schools. But we can listen to those who have shared their stories, learn from Survivors and their families, and carry those teachings forward.
Every story leaves a mark. These are lived experiences and important pieces of history that we have a responsibility to remember and share as we continue the journey toward healing and Right Relations.
This week, you are invited to seek out Survivor testimonies, whether online or in person. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation can help connect you with resources and testimonies.
Some of these stories may be difficult to hear. They should be approached with care, respect and compassion. But listening matters. Learning matters. And carrying these stories forward together is part of the work of reconciliation.
