An update to McDougall United Church on Remit 1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization

Back in the fall your Leadership Council spent two council meetings in discussion as well had an opportunity to participate in a Chinook Winds Region Town Hall meeting regarding the details of this remit. On your behalf  the council voted in favour of UCC Remit #1. This category 3 remit focuses on Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization within The United Church of Canada.

The following communication was provided to us from the United Church Council in their April 9th E-ssential newsletter:

The votes have now been counted! Remit 1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization has passed. What happens now? As is the case with all Category 3 Remits, if a remit has been approved by a majority of all the regional councils, the General Council must decide to enact it. The decision on enacting the remit will take place at the Annual Meeting of General Council, on October 19, 2024. When the remit has been enacted, the change will be included in the next edition of The Manual. (The process for remits is outlined in the United Church Manual, in section F, on pages 108-111.)

On the General Council 44 website, you can find more
detailed information about the remit result, as well as a statement from the National Indigenous Council in response to the vote results.

When we have any further updates we will endeavor to communicate the information to the congregation in a timely manner.
