Podcast Episode: Tainted Wellspring

Episode Blurb:

When fear and power dress up as religious language, how are Christians called to respond? This episode looks unflinchingly at the modern resurgence of fascist and nationalist ideologies and asks what faithfulness looks like in times of rising authoritarianism. How has the church responded before, and how might it respond now?

Podcast features: Rev. Bill Weaver and Ricardo De Menezes with special guest Amy Haynes and Francis Boakye. Special musical guests are Tanya Wan Lim and Gail Feltham.

Amy Haynes is a neurodivergent, Black/biracial mother of two awesome kids. An artist, an anti-oppression activist, former podcaster, and a graduate of both Vancouver School of Theology and Montreal Dio. Amy is approved for ordained ministry with the United Church of Canada and has served the National Church in several roles, most recently as a member of the Equity Support Team at General Council 45 in Calgary. She loves hot yoga, bird-watching, and old episodes of Law & Order. She's always excited for rainy days or a trip to the sea. In tandem, they are a slice of heaven! Additionally, she is interested in womanist theology, adult education, pneumatology (Holy Spirit), and doing work that feeds her soul and contributes to a world that points to the glory and abundance of God. She may or may not still occasionally cuss like someone who bartended for a decade.

Thus, she is grateful for God's abundant grace and forgiveness for her shortcomings.

Francis Boakye is the Executive Director of Action Dignity Society in Calgary. Prior to assuming this position, Francis was the Vice President for Strategy and Outreach at the Centre for Newcomers. He has over 20 years of experience in the settlement/service sector. Francis is an instructor at the social work faculty and adjunct professor at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He is currently a Board member of Canada’s Foundation for Black Communities (FFBC).

Tanya Wan Lim (piano) thoroughly enjoys this new role as lead musician for Prepared to Drown. It inspires her to compose and expand her musical talents.Tanya received a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Music from the University of British Columbia. She has also served as accompanist at Hillhurst United Church, Symon’s Valley Church and other choral groups.

Gail Feltham (voice) grew up in house with a family where music was part of life. She learned piano, clarinet, and violin, and enjoyed making music with her family and others in bands, orchestras and choirs. Gail has continued to sing throughout her life  - in community choirs and church choirs wherever she has lived, with some voice lessons, solo and festival singing through the years. Presently, Gail has the pleasure of singing in Treble Sonica, a McDougall United Church choir, as well as Cum Vino Cantus.
