The Acadia Food Pantry Information, June 2026
The Acadia Food Pantry (AFP) is a no barrier program that provides free food to those in need on the third Tuesday of each month, 11:45 am – 12:45pm. It was established in April 2019 when two Acadia residents and the City of Calgary Community Social Worker for Acadia reached out to Christ Moravian and McDougall United to help support the large number of people living in Acadia who experience food insecurity and were not fully served by the Calgary Food Bank. McDougall was chosen to house the program because its facility has the capacity to store and distribute the food.
AFP patrons include single parent families, new immigrants, seniors, social assistance recipients, low-income wage earners and those who are temporarily unemployed. The City Social Worker and an employee of Trellis are available to provide additional supports and resources for vulnerable families.
With the high cost of living, including food and rent, the number of people needing to access food from AFP grew to an extend where, in the fall of 2024, it became necessary to establish boundaries to remain sustainable. AFP now serves only those living between Glenmore Trail and Canyon Meadows Drive and Blackfoot Trail to 14th St SW. Under the current boundaries, AFP serves a monthly average of more than 55 families (200 individuals).
Volunteers are the heart of the Acadia Food Pantry. Many hands are needed to unload vehicles and move food items in and out of storage. Volunteers set food out for distribution, check best before dates, greet and register patrons, and prepare hampers to be delivered to those who are unable to attend in person. Those with larger vehicles are required to pick up food from suppliers, deliver hampers, dispose of recycled boxes and take leftover fresh items to Mustard Seed. Our volunteers enjoy their time together and are grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community. If you are interested in volunteering, please email acadiapantry@gmail.com.
While AFP utilizes food rescue programs and food donations from churches, most of the food is purchased thanks to financial gifts. Monetary donation made through CMC are eligible for tax receipts. Those wishing to make a recurring monthly donation are asked to set that up be calling McDougall (403-252-1620) or visiting www.mcdunited.com/donate.
